GENERAL SKILLED MIGRATION (GSM) PROGRAM

Skilled migration is usually based on points system. It is generally for skilled workers and professionals who want to live and work in Australia.

General Criteria at the time of invitation:

  • Age: be under 45 years old

  • Have a minimum score of 65 points on the expression of interest (EOI) lodged with the Skillselect system.

  • Be invited to apply through the Skillselect system

  • At the time of invitation, have a minimum level of Competent English

  • Have a positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation.

There are 4 different skilled visa categories:

Subclass 189: Skilled Independent

For skilled workers/professionals who are invited by the government to apply for a permanent residence visa in Australia. Read more…..

Subclass 491: Skilled Work Regional

A 5-year temporary visa for skilled migrants who will live and work in a designated regional postcode in Australia. This is a provisional pathway to permanent residence.

Subclass 191: Skilled Work Regional

This is a permanent residence visa for visa holders of subclass 491 and subclass 494, who hold a provisional right to apply after having lived and worked for a minimum of 3 years in a designated regional postcode.

The minimum score required is: 65 points

This is for all GSM skilled visas
: Subclass 189, 190, 491 visas.
However, there are quotas for certain occupations,
so if there are many applicants on the same occupation type as yours, it means a stiffer competition and
your score would likely need to be higher than minimum of 65 points to be selected by Skillselect or the sponsoring state/territory.

SKILLED VISA TYPES

  • Subclass 189: Skilled Independent

    This permanent residence visa has 3 different streams:

    a) Points Tested stream:
    for skilled workers/professionals needed in Australia with at least 65 points and have been invited through Skillselect system to apply.

    b) New Zealand stream :
    This stream was permanently closed from date 1 Jul 2023     with changes of eligibility for NZ citizens.

    c) Hong Kong stream
    for eligible Hong Kong or British National (Overseas) passport holders who have lived and worked in Australia for a minimum of 4 years’ time immediately before application.

  • Subclass 190: Skilled-Nominated

    This permanent residence visa requires state/territory nomination to be invited to apply. To qualify, you will need to be under 45 years of age, with a minimum of Competent English level, 65 points and a successful skills assessment for your occupation.

  • Subclass 491: Skilled Work Regional

    This is a provisional visa which entitles you to apply for permanent residence upon holding this visa for 3 years and having fulfilled certain requirements such as location of work and stay, minimum residence period and threshold of taxable income.

  • Subclass 191: Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional)

    This is phase 2 and a provisional pathway of the subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional visa and subclass 494 Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa. Applicants holding both of these subclasses have a provisional entitlement to apply for permanent residence upon fulfilling specified conditions and having lived and worked in a designated regional postcode for at least 3 years.
